Is it for me?

Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is one of the fastest growing martial arts in the world and has become widely established as a highly effective discipline.  Furthermore, Jiu Jitsu is effective for everyone, focusing on techniques and body mechanics rather than strength or size.

Learning how to defend oneself is a powerful accomplishment leading to inner confidence and increased self-esteem. One of the things that separates Jiu Jitsu from other Martial Arts is that right from the start, a student will practice techniques using live simulations one on one with a partner.  This physical contact is one of the most powerful elements of the art because such contact triggers the release of neurotransmitters in our brain and hormones throughout our body, which make us more aware, focused, and connected. Additionally, the brain releases Oxytocin, the ‘cuddle’ hormone, which creates a strong sense of wellbeing and happiness. Another positive outcome from training in such an intense way is the release of a protein in the brain called Brain Derived Neurotrophic Factor. This protein produces a strong feeling of euphoria and helps us to feel more energised and positive for several hours afterwards

The psychological reaction to practising Jiu Jitsu is similar to the concept of ‘Mindfulness’ in which people are encouraged to focus on the present moment, disconnecting from worries of the past or the future. The intense nature of the highly realistic situations the student will learn to deal with in Jiu Jitsu forces triggers in the brain as it recognises a ‘survival situation’ and the student becomes intensely alert, aware and focused on the present. ‘Surviving’ and escaping becomes the only thought process and forces strategic thinking and intense focus. 

These skills can be transferred directly to how we approach situations in everyday life, for example, weight loss, stress, relationship issues, and self-confidence. You will learn how to think through problems more constructively than before, on and off the mats.

Training the techniques and participating in live training sessions, with your partners and coaches, will give you an arsenal of weapons at your disposal whenever you should need them. The more you train, the more you will arm yourself with knowledge and skills to fight all your battles in life like a black belt.
